The History of Uretech
Uretech’s first polyurethane installation was at a quartz mine near Delmas in 2004, where it outperformed steel liners and impressed the Engineering Manager. Uretech continued to innovate its products by developing a patented composite backing plate, which was more flexible, light weight and easy to install. Uretech also introduced red and yellow wear indicator liners, which gave a visual warning when the liners needed to be replaced.
In 2010, Uretech became an independent company after separating from Dot Steel, which changed the company’s shareholding structure. However, Uretech faced serious challenges in the following years, due to the social and economic unrest in the mining sector. The Marikana Massacre in 2012, the unprotected strike at Sishen in 2012, and the AMCU strike in the platinum sector in 2014 had a negative impact on Uretech’s business. To cope with these challenges, Uretech moved its factory from Vanderbijlpark to Witbank in 2014, where most of its coal customers were located.
In 2016, Uretech restructured its business by creating two separate entities: one for polyurethane manufacturing and one for sales and marketing. The sales and marketing entity was sold to HMA, one of Australia’s largest engineering companies, and became HMA South Africa. HMA South Africa became the sole distributor for Uretech’s polyurethane products in Southern Africa.
In 2021, Uretech acquired a property between Brits and Hartbeespoort in the Limpopo province, because of its proximity to suppliers and platinum and chrome customers.
